Older BowFlex SelectTech 552 dumbbells are subject to a US recall. If you own a recalled set, stop using it and follow BowFlex's recall process. A working dial or a complete-looking set does not clear a recalled unit for use.

This independent reference was checked November 1, 2026. It helps readers follow an older 552 product mention to current safety information. It is not a price listing or a recommendation to buy a recalled set.

Which dumbbells were recalled?

The CPSC recall notice, dated June 5, 2025, covers the BowFlex 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells. Weight plates can come loose during use and cause an impact injury.

The older 552 has a 5–52.5 lb range per dumbbell. CPSC describes black units with handles, plates and a molded plastic tray. Model and serial labels are on the bottom of the tray. Use the notice's identification photos when checking a unit; the general illustration on this page is not a product identification image.

Check What to use
Model The label on the tray, plus official identification photos
Serial number The unit's own label, retained for the claim
Purchase history Receipt or order record, if available
Recall decision BowFlex's current recall guidance

Do not treat a missing receipt or an unlisted serial number as proof that a unit is safe. BowFlex's recall page says genuine US 552/1090 products covered by that recall remain eligible even when their serial number is absent from the CPSC list.

What owners should do now

Stop using the affected dumbbells and start the claim on BowFlex's official site. Keep your model, serial and purchase details ready. Follow the instructions for the return; do not ship parts based on an old retailer article or a message from a used-equipment seller.

BowFlex distinguishes purchases made before April 23, 2024 from purchases made April 23, 2024 through May 2025. Available remedies differ by purchase period. Read BowFlex's current claim page for your case rather than assuming every buyer gets the same remedy.

Is a newer Results Series 552 the same model?

No. BowFlex's recall guidance links to newer Results Series replacement products. The shared 552 name can make old reviews, secondhand listings and current products hard to separate. Ask for the full model name and use BowFlex's help if identification is unclear.

Do not use the presence of a new retail listing to dismiss the recall on an older set. Likewise, do not assume every current BowFlex dumbbell is recalled merely because an old article calls it a SelectTech.

Reading older home-gym recommendations

A dated article may still describe dialing a weight and lifting it from the tray, or link to an old price page. That description is not current recall advice. Before following a buying recommendation, check the exact model, safety status and the seller's documentation.

Our adjustable dumbbell mechanism guide explains the wider category. It does not replace the recall notice or the manual for your unit.

Verdict

For an older SelectTech 552, identify the unit and follow the official recall route first. Use BowFlex's current guidance to resolve eligibility and remedies. An old price link, an intact handle or a seller's assurance cannot answer those questions.
